The Expat – Double IPA

Our brewhouse – THE EXPAT.

To celebrate the trans-Tasman rivalry, Hop Nation and Sawmill Brewery are launching two collaboration beers. The first beer was brewed in NZ at the Sawmill Brewery and is an all Australian-hopped Pale Ale which was released in NZ on Australia Day.

The second – THE EXPAT – was brewed in-house at Hop Nation and is an all NZ-hopped Double IPA released to celebrate Waitangi Day in Australia.

Big, bold and damn hoppy. This double is celebrating everything that is great about NZ hops. A selection of NZ hops including the combination of Nelson Sauvin, Motueka and Brooklyn.

Kiwi friends Duncan (Hop Nation) and Logan Richmond (Sawmill) met in New Zealand while studying winemaking but after years in the wine industry the two have both since landed in beer. Staying in contact over the years, Hop Nation learned of the sale of the Sawmill brewhouse in 2016 and jumped at the chance to take it off their hands and give it a new home in Footscray. After its month-long voyage across the Tasman the kit had its inaugural brew in July of 2016 and has since been ticking around the clock to keep up with HN’s thirsty customers.

Dunc joined Logan and owners Mike and Kirsty at Sawmill in January of 2017 to help put together the Pale Ale and Logan flew over to Melbourne a couple weeks later to brew with Dunc and Sam. Teaming up with the Sawmill crew was a celebration of the now Hop Nation brewhouse and great opportunity to talk about the history and future of brewery.
